Sexual Pedagogies pp Cite as. As is the case elsewhere in the world, Australian sex-education manuals reflect prevailing social opinion and follow the shifts and lurches of public approbation. Prior to the s, sex-instruction manuals in Australia were considered primarily suitable for marriage guidance counseling, and were mostly used by members of the clergy for discussion with young couples during their engagement period. In the public world, at least, sex was best not spoken about, and sexual information was rarely directed at young people themselves, but instead was intended to be mediated by parents, teachers, clergy, or doctors. This chapter offers some reasons for this dramatic change in thinking and analyzes some representative sex-instruction manuals of the decade, concentrating particularly upon what they had to say about and to Australian boys, and upon their underlying messages about the edification and shaping of the future man. In England from the late 19th century, a number of sex education publications were produced, mainly aimed at helping parents to enlighten their children. However, in school, little formal school sex education took place before the Second World War.

However, many of the parents of children born in this era had grown up with strict late-Victorian and early-Edwardian values instilled in them. Talking about the body, emotions and sex was not considered appropriate and often caused much embarrassment between child and parent. Lack of sex education at both school and home meant that generations of children grew up with little knowledge of sex, relationships, sexually transmitted diseases or contraception, and had few opportunities to ask about them in a safe environment. Abortion was not made legal in the UK until , so the only options for a young pregnant woman who did not want, or was not able, to keep her baby were either an illegal termination, or putting the child up for adoption once it was born. The Act did not extend to Northern Ireland where abortion is still illegal.
